ABSTRACT
Introduction: Ovarian carcinosarcomas are rare gynecological cancers, accounting for less than 1% of all ovarian tumors. They are characterized by containing both high grade, malignant, epithelial and mesenchymal components. This unusual histology can represent a challenge both in terms of diagnosis and treatment. In previously reported cases and small series, patients were submitted to optimal cytoreductive surgery followed by platinum-based chemotherapy.
Case Report: We report a clinical case describing a 71-year-old Caucasian woman diagnosed with an ovarian carcinosarcoma with uncommon histopathological features. She was submitted to surgery and systemic chemotherapy.
Conclusion: Prospective studies are necessary to further clarify the best approach regarding the treatment of carcinosarcoma.
